Message from Irene Nesbit, President Nesbit Systems Inc.
The importance of metadata in the digital age
Descriptive information associated with digital video will be essential in management and
retrieval of these assets as they are created and repurposed. There is, and will continue to
be, increasing amounts of both analog and digital video. As this proliferation mounts the
importance of metadata will increase correspondingly. It is important that the descriptive
data associated with these video assets be accurate and well maintained, and if possible
conform to pre-defined conventions of structure and integrity. These "rules" may only apply
within the context of your own organization, but as digital repurposing and distribution
become more commonplace a common set of metadata standards will become increasingly useful.
At Nesbit Systems we are continually involved in helping our clients define and manage useful
metadata constructs for their media libraries. Our Media Library System is designed to provide
metadata structures for both analog and digital assets. So far we have seen nothing which
works as well as custom designed data structures which meet the unique requirements of an
individual organization. But just as HTML and XML have begun to define common data structures
for sharing information on the Internet, so will vertical markets for digital asset management.
These standards will evolve slowly, but they will evolve and we will be monitoring them. And
we will continue to design our system so that the information it tracks and how it tracks it
will be compatible with evolving standards in your industry. We want to be positioned to meet
the demands of the digital age, and we want you to be as well.
Emailing Media Library System and Dub Order Reports
Emailing MLS or Dub Order reports is easy with the help of Acrobat PDFWriter. From the MLS
system, you can create a PDF file and then email this PDF file as an attachment.
When printing an MLS or Dub report, select PDFWriter as the printer in the Printer Setup dialog
box and click OK. After the report displays and you click on the printer icon, the Save as PDF
file dialog box will display. Select the folder where you wish to create the file and enter
the name of the report PDF you wish to create in the File name box. This PDF file can be
printed and/or emailed as an attachment.
NSi Strategic Partnerships: Convergence of Analog and Digital Asset Management
Nesbit Systems has always worked to provide the best solutions to media asset management for
our clients. As production and broadcast operations straddle the chasm between analog and
digital media we have attempted to position our company to work with you in both endeavors to
provide a path for transition from analog to digital media asset management. Our current
software products and our strategic partnerships bear this out. With Fort Lee Film and
Storage we are offering comprehensive software and storage solutions for your physical
assets. We all know these assets will not be going away anytime in the near future and the
need to manage them will continue. With Venaca, we are providing convergence between
the analog asset and physical tape and digital asset management. We integrate the physical
asset management capabilities of our Media Library System by importing the associated
metadata of the analog asset (see above) into Venaca’s DAM. In this way the asset can be
located, no matter in what format it may exist, including digital tape on the backend.
NSi will continue to strive to evolve with the demands of both analog and digital asset
management and provide solutions to assist you in managing this convergence.
